Why is cloud computing so important?

Moving to the cloud is giving businesses of all sizes the ability to move faster, be more stream-line and innovative. The shift to cloud computing has completely transformed how we work, communicate and collaborate and has quickly become a necessity to stay competitive in today's digital age. 

What is cloud computing? 

I try not to make fun of people for admitting they don't know things. Because for each thing ‘everyone knows'  by the time they're adults, every day there are, on average, 10,000 people in the US hearing about it for the first time. We are all borning knowing nothing so as long as you have the willingness and the discipline to learn, you can learn anything. 

Before we get into WHY cloud computing is so important we have to first go over what the hell cloud computing even is? Cloud computing is a term used to describe the delivery of on-demand computing resources like hardware, storage, database, networking and software to business via a network (usually the internet). This allows a business organization to access and store information without having to manage their own physical IT infrastructure. 

As the amount of data being generated and shared continues to increase and consumers demand more access to online services, it has become more difficult for companies to continue operating their businesses on in-house services. 

If you're a large or small business, services in the cloud allow you to adjust compute and storage without having to pay for upfront infrastructure costs.

You have the ability to choose from public, private or hybrid cloud deployments. The three main types of cloud service models include:

  • infrastructure as a service (IaaS): on-demand access to compute, storage, networking and virtualization.
  • platform as a service (PaaS): hardware and software resources needed for cloud application development
  • software as a service (SaaS): full-application stack as a cloud service, including the maintenance and management from underlying infrastructure to application software.
